Knotwood uses an extrusion process, meaning materials are readily recycled without further processing at the end of use. Goal – Reduce energy use in building operation through a variety of means.
Solution – Save energy by using the Knotwood face fastening system which allows for exterior insulation. Exterior insulation has proven to be 40% more effective than interior insulation, decreasing demand on building HVAC systems.
Construction Waste Management

Goal – Divert construction and demolition debris from disposal in landfills and incineration facilities through recycling or salvaging.

A WORD ABOUT ALUMINUM
Choosing a material with sustainability in mind is becoming more paramount. Metal is one of the most recycled materials on the planet and aluminum boasts one of the highest recycling rates of any metal. KNOTWOOD’s is 100% recyclable, uses VOC free coatings, and lead-free finishes resulting in a smaller environmental footprint. KNOTWOOD remains committed to ecologically responsible production processes.
Aluminum boasts one of the highest recycling rates of any metal. At the end of their long life, KNOTWOOD extrusions can be readily recycled. Recycled aluminum generally falls into two broad categories.
New scrap resulting from a manufacturing process such as extrusion is often not contaminated and of known quality. This scrap is remelted and reprocessed with very little further treatment. Due to its high value, such scrap enjoys an almost 100% recycle rate.
Old scrap, such as that from beverage cans, building and transport is gathered and recycled via an efficient network of scrap metal merchants which sort and separate it from other metals such as iron and steel. This scrap is most usually remelted by secondary refiners into silicon-based alloys used predominantly for aluminum castings.
As recycling of aluminum requires only 5% of the initial energy consumed to create it, recycling one ton of aluminum saves 5 tons of bauxite and 15,000-kilowatt hours of electricity, making excellent environmental and financial sense.
